Is Creatine Bad for Your Kidneys? What the Evidence - and Health Canada - Actually Say

The right answer is not “creatine is dangerous” or “creatine is harmless for everyone.” The evidence is more useful than either slogan.

Why kidney concerns keep coming up

Creatine is converted partly to creatinine, a blood marker commonly used when estimating kidney function. Because creatine supplementation can modestly increase serum creatinine in some studies, people sometimes interpret that result as proof of kidney damage.

Those are not automatically the same thing. A laboratory marker can change because of metabolism without meaning the organ has been injured.

What recent evidence shows

A 2026 systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized trials found that creatine supplementation was associated with a modest increase in serum creatinine, but did not show significant differences in urea or estimated glomerular filtration rate, or eGFR, between creatine and control groups. The authors still called for longer-term randomized trials extending beyond one year.

A separate 2025 meta-analysis similarly reported a small rise in serum creatinine without a significant reduction in GFR, concluding that kidney filtration appeared preserved in the studied populations.

So is creatine “safe for kidneys”? Be precise.

For healthy adults using studied amounts, the available controlled evidence does not show the pattern we would expect if creatine routinely damaged kidney filtration. That is reassuring.

But it would be irresponsible to turn that into 'creatine is safe for absolutely everyone.' People with kidney disease are a different clinical population, and long-term evidence is not infinite.

Health Canada’s warning matters

Health Canada's creatine monohydrate monograph requires users with a kidney disorder to ask a health care practitioner before use. Biogénique's label carries that warning. It also advises consultation before use during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

Those warnings are not obstacles to conversion. They are part of credible health communication. A customer who sees a brand acknowledge risk appropriately has more reason to trust its benefit claims.

Tell your clinician you use creatine

If you have bloodwork, tell the clinician interpreting it that you use creatine. Serum creatinine can be influenced by multiple factors, including muscle mass, diet and creatine intake. Your healthcare professional can decide whether other measurements are appropriate in your situation.

Do not use an online article to interpret abnormal lab values or to self-clear a kidney condition.

Biogénique: quality is also about what you leave out of the promise

Biogénique Creatine Monohydrate provides 5 g of creatine monohydrate per serving in a 500 g powder. The current label displays NPN 80042440, lists no non-medicinal ingredients, and states that it is made in Canada from domestic and imported ingredients.

The formula is simple, but simple does not mean unregulated. The current label displays NPN 80042440 and the product should be used according to its legally approved directions. Biogénique's Quality First and 3X PUR™ approach works best when it combines transparent product information, lot-specific quality documentation and disciplined claims - not when it overstates what a supplement can guarantee. 3X PUR™ is an internal brand framework, not an external certification.

If you are a healthy adult who trains

Creatine monohydrate has a strong evidence base for high-intensity performance and resistance-training outcomes. If you are healthy and choose to use it, follow the labelled dose and stay attentive to your overall health.

If you have a kidney disorder, are pregnant or breastfeeding, the next step is not a checkout button. It is a conversation with a healthcare professional.

Bottom line

Recent meta-analyses do not show a significant decline in kidney filtration measures from creatine in the studied populations, although serum creatinine can rise modestly and longer-term evidence continues to develop.

Health Canada still tells people with kidney disorders to seek professional advice before use. Both facts belong in the same honest answer.

QUALITY FIRST. TRAIN WITH PURPOSE.
