Vitamin C 500 mg: Benefits, Absorption, Daily Dose and Safety

Vitamin C is an essential water-soluble nutrient involved in collagen formation, wound healing, antioxidant defence and immune function. What is vitamin C?

Vitamin C, also called ascorbic acid, is a water-soluble vitamin that humans must obtain from food or supplements. Unlike most mammals, humans cannot synthesize it. The body also regulates vitamin C tightly: intestinal transport, tissue uptake, kidney reabsorption and urinary excretion all influence how much remains available after a dose.

Vitamin C acts as an electron donor for several enzymes and as an antioxidant in aqueous parts of the body. It helps keep iron and copper at the correct oxidation state inside enzymes that build collagen, synthesize carnitine and contribute to catecholamine production. It can also regenerate vitamin E after oxidation. These biochemical roles explain why adequate vitamin C is essential; they do not mean that ever-larger oral doses produce ever-larger benefits in someone who is already replete.

Which vitamin C benefits are authorized in Canada?

Health Canada's 26 June 2026 multi-vitamin/mineral supplements monograph recognizes ascorbic acid as an acceptable vitamin C source. Permitted nutrient-function claims include helping maintain immune function; helping in wound healing and connective-tissue formation; helping in collagen formation; helping develop and maintain bones, cartilage, teeth and gums; providing an antioxidant for the maintenance of good health; helping maintain normal nervous-system function; helping the body metabolize nutrients; and helping prevent vitamin C deficiency.

Those are support and prevention claims. They do not authorize statements that a 500 mg capsule prevents or cures colds, treats cancer, reverses cardiovascular disease, erases wrinkles, heals an injury on its own or replaces medical care. An essential nutrient can participate in a process without a high-dose supplement improving every disease connected to that process.

How much vitamin C do adults need?

The U.S. and Canadian Dietary Reference Intake framework sets the adult Recommended Dietary Allowance at 75 mg/day for women and 90 mg/day for men. Pregnancy raises the RDA to 85 mg/day and lactation to 120 mg/day for adults. People who smoke are advised to add 35 mg/day because tobacco smoke increases oxidative burden and vitamin C turnover. These amounts are designed to meet the needs of nearly all healthy people; they are not treatment doses and do not diagnose an individual's status.

One 500 mg capsule supplies about 6.7 times the adult-woman RDA and 5.6 times the adult-man RDA. Two capsules provide 1,000 mg/day—still below the 2,000 mg adult maximum, but not a dose the average healthy adult must reach to avoid deficiency. The total should include vitamin C from multivitamins, immune formulas, drink powders, fortified foods and other single-nutrient products.

How well is a 500 mg dose absorbed?

Oral vitamin C absorption is efficient at modest intakes and becomes less efficient as a dose rises. NIH reports that roughly 70%–90% is absorbed at intakes of 30–180 mg/day, while absorption falls below 50% at doses above 1 gram/day. Unabsorbed vitamin C remains in the intestine, and absorbed vitamin C that exceeds tissue and kidney-handling needs is increasingly excreted in urine.

This means that 500 mg is not useless; it means the dose-response curve is not linear. A 500 mg capsule does not create five times the circulating concentration of a 100 mg intake. NIH notes that cells appear close to saturation at daily intakes around 100 mg or more and that plasma concentration increases only marginally at intakes of at least 200 mg in many healthy people. Individual status, timing, food, illness and kidney function can alter the response, but the practical rule remains: more swallowed is not the same as proportionally more retained.

ABSORPTION IS SATURABLE: A 500 mg capsule is a high-potency oral dose. It can help cover a gap, but it does not produce a proportional fivefold advantage over 100 mg. Splitting intake may improve fractional absorption, yet the product's current compliant label—not a self-designed megadose schedule—should govern use.


Is 500 mg of vitamin C too much?

For a generally healthy adult aged 19 or older, 500 mg/day is below the current Health Canada monograph maximum of 2,000 mg/day. The reviewed label direction of one or two capsules daily supplies 500–1,000 mg/day, also below that ceiling. A ceiling is not a target, however. The appropriate amount depends on diet, total supplement intake, tolerance, kidney function, iron status, medicines and the reason for use.

The most common dose-limiting effects are gastrointestinal: loose stools, nausea, abdominal cramps or discomfort caused in part by unabsorbed vitamin C drawing water into the intestine. Symptoms generally improve when intake is reduced or stopped. Taking several products at once can push total intake toward the upper limit even when each label appears reasonable in isolation.

MAXIMUM IS NOT A GOAL: Canada's 2,000 mg/day adult maximum is a risk-management ceiling, not a recommended daily target. Use the lowest amount that matches a clear purpose, do not stack products unknowingly and reassess ongoing high-dose use instead of assuming that water solubility makes any amount harmless.


Does vitamin C prevent or treat the common cold?

Vitamin C supports normal immune function, but that authorized role is not the same as preventing every respiratory infection. NIH's review of controlled trials reports that regular vitamin C supplementation did not significantly reduce cold incidence in the general population. In people exposed to brief periods of extreme physical exercise or cold, regular intakes in the studied range reduced incidence, but that finding does not apply automatically to everyday consumers.

Regular supplementation may modestly shorten cold duration—about 8% in adults and 14% in children in the cited review—but starting vitamin C only after symptoms began did not consistently improve duration or severity. This 500 mg product is licensed for nutrient support, not as a cold treatment. A cold-prevention headline would overstate both the evidence and the authorized purpose.

Why does vitamin C matter for collagen and wound healing?

Collagen is the structural protein framework in skin, blood vessels, tendons, cartilage, gums, teeth and the organic matrix of bone. Vitamin C is required by enzymes that hydroxylate proline and lysine residues during collagen production. Without adequate vitamin C, collagen fibres are unstable and tissues lose integrity—the mechanism behind bleeding gums, poor wound healing and other features of scurvy.

Correcting inadequate vitamin C is therefore important for normal tissue formation. That does not make a 500 mg capsule a stand-alone treatment for wounds, periodontal disease, fractures or skin aging. Protein intake, energy intake, circulation, infection control, glucose management, smoking status and medical treatment can all influence healing. Persistent or serious wounds require professional care.

Vitamin C and iron absorption

Vitamin C can increase absorption of non-heme iron, the form found in plant foods and many supplements, by reducing ferric iron to a more soluble ferrous form and helping keep it available in the intestine. Pairing beans, lentils or fortified grains with peppers, citrus or another vitamin C source can therefore improve iron absorption from a meal.

That interaction can be useful when iron intake or status is low, but it is not appropriate to self-treat anemia without identifying the cause. In hereditary hemochromatosis or another iron-overload condition, chronic high vitamin C intake can theoretically worsen iron accumulation and tissue injury. Anyone receiving treatment for iron overload or taking therapeutic iron should coordinate vitamin C use with the clinician managing that condition.

Kidney stones, kidney disease and high vitamin C intake

Part of absorbed vitamin C is metabolized to oxalate, which is why high supplemental intake is discussed in relation to calcium-oxalate kidney stones. NIH notes that studies of vitamin C intake and urinary oxalate have produced conflicting results and that the best evidence of a contribution is in people with pre-existing hyperoxaluria. For healthy adults, concern is lower; for people with renal disorders or a recurrent stone history, the risk-benefit decision is more individualized.

Reduced kidney function also changes how water-soluble nutrients and their metabolites are handled. People with chronic kidney disease, dialysis, primary hyperoxaluria, recurrent calcium-oxalate stones or unexplained flank pain should not interpret the general adult upper limit as personal clearance for high-dose use. They should ask the renal-care team or pharmacist before taking a 500 mg product regularly.

Medication and treatment interactions

NIH advises people receiving chemotherapy or radiation therapy to discuss antioxidant supplements with their oncologist. Evidence is mixed: antioxidants might protect normal tissues in some settings, but there is concern that they could also interfere with treatments designed to generate oxidative damage. The correct decision depends on the cancer, treatment, dose and timing; it should not be made from a supplement label or blog post.

Vitamin C used together with other antioxidants may also attenuate some lipid changes produced by a niacin/simvastatin regimen, although the relevance to other statins is uncertain. Which foods provide vitamin C?

Fruits and vegetables are the main dietary sources. NIH highlights citrus fruits, tomatoes and tomato juice, peppers, kiwifruit, broccoli, strawberries, Brussels sprouts and cantaloupe. Potatoes also contribute meaningfully in diets where they are eaten often. Food supplies vitamin C alongside fibre, potassium, folate and many plant compounds that a single-nutrient capsule does not reproduce.

Vitamin C is sensitive to heat and can leach into cooking water. Eating a mix of raw and gently cooked produce helps preserve intake, while using the cooking liquid in soups or sauces reduces losses. A supplement can cover a consistent dietary gap, but it should complement rather than displace fruit, vegetables and an overall adequate diet.

Who is more likely to have low vitamin C status?

Severe deficiency is uncommon in people with regular access to varied food, but risk rises with very limited diets, food insecurity, alcohol or drug dependence, severe malabsorption, cachexia, some chronic diseases and smoking. People with end-stage renal disease on hemodialysis can also have low concentrations, although their supplement plan must be managed carefully because kidney handling is altered.

Early deficiency can cause fatigue and malaise; more advanced deficiency can produce inflamed or bleeding gums, easy bruising, small skin haemorrhages, joint pain, impaired wound healing, corkscrew hairs and anemia. What do the reviewed Certificates of Analysis show?

The public quality-control search currently identifies lot 230909 for Vitamin C 500 MG. Its COA lists a September 2023 manufacturing date, an August 2025 expiry and QA approval dated 15 December 2023. The report lists the 500 mg formulation, an average capsule weight of 718.50 mg, a compliant lock length and a six-minute disintegration result against a not-more-than-30-minute specification.

For lot 230909, total plate count and yeast and mould were each reported below 10 CFU/g. E. coli, Salmonella, Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa were reported negative. Arsenic, cadmium and mercury were reported below 0.001 micrograms per kilogram of body weight per day, while lead was reported at 0.001 in the report's stated units. The report is expired as of 20 August 2026 and does not show a vitamin C assay result.

A newer internal technical packet describes lot 240741, manufactured July 2024 with a June 2027 expiry. It reports a 608.42 mg average capsule weight, 12-minute disintegration, microbial results below 10 CFU/g or negative, and heavy-metal results below 0.001 in its stated units. It also lists 500 mg as the formula but does not include an analytical vitamin C assay or potency row. The public page and current saleable inventory should identify which record applies.

COA LIMIT: A formula line saying 'vitamin C 500 mg' is not the same as a finished-product assay result. The reviewed reports support the stated physical, disintegration, microbial and heavy-metal findings only. Do not say a batch was analytically confirmed for 500 mg potency until a current, lot-matched report includes that test and result.


How to use a 500 mg vitamin C product responsibly

  1. Define the purpose. Use a supplement to address a real dietary or clinical need, not because more must be better.

  2. Read the current bottle. Confirm count, dose, ingredients, lot and expiry instead of relying on older artwork or a generic web description.
