Potassium Supplement Benefits: Do You Actually Need Potassium Chloride?

A practical guide to potassium chloride 100 mg, dosage, safety and what the evidence really supports

Reviewed by the Biogénique® Medical & Scientific Team

Potassium is one of those nutrients people usually notice only when something feels off. A cramp after a workout. A sports-drink label. A blood test with a number you do not recognize. Then the obvious question follows: should I take a potassium supplement?

The answer is less dramatic than supplement marketing sometimes makes it sound. Potassium is essential, but your body is also careful with it. Most of your daily potassium should come from food, and a supplement makes the most sense when it fills a real gap rather than when it is used as a guess.

QUICK ANSWER  The clearest potassium supplement benefit is simple: helping top up potassium intake when the diet is low. Biogénique Potassium Chloride provides 100 mg of elemental potassium per capsule. Its current Canadian label is licensed as a source of an electrolyte for the maintenance of good health and to help prevent potassium deficiency due to low dietary intake. Adults take one capsule one to two times daily. Because potassium can build up when kidney function or certain medications interfere with excretion, it is one mineral you should not casually stack across several products.

Why potassium matters - and why “more” is not automatically better

Potassium is an electrolyte involved in normal nerve transmission, muscle contraction, and kidney and heart function. Health Canada’s current Dietary Reference Intake tables set Adequate Intakes at 3,400 mg per day for adult men and 2,600 mg for adult women. [3]

Those numbers are context, not a target to recreate with capsules. Potatoes, beans and lentils, vegetables, fruit, dairy, nuts, meat and fish all contribute potassium. A 100 mg capsule is intentionally modest. [4]

What are the real benefits of a potassium supplement?

Search “potassium supplement benefits” and you will find everything from muscle-cramp claims to blood-pressure promises. The product-specific answer is narrower.

For Biogénique Potassium Chloride, the licensed benefit is electrolyte support and helping prevent potassium deficiency caused by low dietary intake. That is the sensible role of a small-dose supplement: filling a dietary gap. [1]

Low blood potassium, or hypokalemia, is different. It can occur with prolonged vomiting or diarrhea, some medications and medical conditions. NIH notes that severe deficiency is uncommon in otherwise healthy people with normal kidney function. If a blood test shows low potassium, the next step is medical assessment rather than extra capsules. [4]

What does “Potassium Chloride 100 mg” actually mean?

The 100 mg on the Biogénique label refers to elemental potassium delivered from potassium chloride. At one capsule a day, that is roughly 3% of the adult male Adequate Intake and about 4% of the adult female Adequate Intake. At the labelled maximum of two capsules daily, 200 mg is still only about 6% to 8%. [1] [3]

That small contribution is not a weakness. It tells you what the product is designed to do: supplement the diet, not replace it.

Health Canada’s June 26, 2026 Multi-Vitamin/Mineral Supplements Monograph recognizes potassium chloride as a potassium source and lists 100 to 200 mg per day for the adult electrolyte use - matching Biogénique’s one-to-two-capsule direction. [2]

Potassium chloride vs potassium citrate: what actually matters?

Potassium chloride and potassium citrate are different salts that both deliver potassium. Health Canada recognizes both as source ingredients. The useful comparison is elemental potassium, licensed use and directions - not a blanket claim that one form is “better absorbed.” [2]

Biogénique uses potassium chloride and provides 100 mg of elemental potassium per capsule. A full potassium chloride vs potassium citrate comparison is a separate search intent and should not be forced into this article.

What about blood pressure?

This is where good ingredient science can turn into an exaggerated product claim.

A 2025 dose-response meta-analysis of 10 randomized trials found larger blood-pressure reductions from increased potassium intake in people with hypertension than in people without it. But the scale was very different from this product. A 50 mmol/day increase in urinary potassium - roughly 2,000 mg of potassium - was associated with the reported effects. [5]

Biogénique provides 100 to 200 mg per labelled day. So the honest takeaway is that potassium matters in cardiovascular nutrition, but blood-pressure treatment is not a licensed claim for this product, and gram-level research should not be borrowed to make it one.

Potassium safety deserves a little more attention

For healthy people, food is generally the safest way to increase potassium. Risk changes when the kidneys cannot clear potassium normally or medications reduce potassium excretion.

NIH specifically flags chronic kidney disease and medicines such as ACE inhibitors, angiotensin-receptor blockers and potassium-sparing diuretics as situations in which potassium can rise too high. The Biogénique label gives a simpler product-specific contraindication: do not use with other potassium-containing supplements or potassium-containing salt substitutes. Health Canada’s current monograph requires the same warning at 100 mg or more per day. [1] [2] [4]

Potassium can already be hiding in electrolyte powders, multivitamins and salt substitutes. Check before adding another source.

How to decide if a potassium supplement belongs in your routine

  • Are you filling a dietary gap, or trying to explain a symptom?

  • Are you already getting potassium from another supplement, electrolyte powder or salt substitute?

  • Do kidney problems or medications change your risk?

  • Are you expecting the product to do something it is not licensed to do, such as treat hypertension or correct a diagnosed medical deficiency?

If the goal is simply to add a small amount because your diet runs low in potassium-rich foods and none of the safety issues apply, a measured 100 mg potassium chloride supplement is easy to understand. If the reason is a lab result, ongoing weakness, palpitations, significant vomiting or another medical concern, do not self-design the dose.

Frequently asked questions

Is 100 mg of potassium a lot?

No. Compared with adult Adequate Intake values of 2,600 to 3,400 mg per day, 100 mg is a small amount. The labelled maximum of 200 mg per day is still a modest contribution.

Can potassium supplements help muscle cramps?

Potassium is involved in normal muscle function, but a cramp does not prove potassium deficiency. Cramps have many causes. Biogénique Potassium Chloride is not licensed as a muscle-cramp treatment.

Can I take Biogénique Potassium every day?

The current label directs adults to take one capsule one to two times daily and does not set a fixed duration. If you are taking it because of a medication, kidney issue or abnormal blood test, confirm the plan with a clinician or pharmacist.

What foods are high in potassium?

Potatoes, beans, lentils, leafy greens, tomatoes, squash, dried fruit, bananas, dairy, nuts, meat and fish can all contribute potassium. Food should do most of the heavy lifting for daily intake.

The bottom line

Potassium is essential, but that does not make every potassium supplement automatically useful. The best use case is boring in the best possible way: a clear dietary gap, a modest dose and a product that says exactly what it is designed to do.

Biogénique Potassium Chloride delivers 100 mg of elemental potassium per capsule, with a labelled adult dose of one to two capsules daily. It is licensed in Canada as an electrolyte source for the maintenance of good health and to help prevent potassium deficiency due to low dietary intake. Its current lot, 240546, has a matching Certificate of Analysis showing that the tested lot met the listed purity, quality and disintegration specifications. [1] [7]

If you need a small potassium top-up, you know what you are getting. If you are trying to treat a medical problem, the smarter move is to find out what is actually causing it first.

Evidence & compliance note

Product identity, dose, licensed use, contraindication, non-medicinal ingredients and lot/expiry information were verified against the current Biogénique label for NPN 80079594. Lot-specific results were verified against the matching Medicap Laboratories COA for lot 240546 and the current Biogénique Quality Control listing. Health Canada’s current Multi-Vitamin/Mineral Supplements Monograph recognizes potassium chloride as a potassium source, supports the adult electrolyte use at 100-200 mg/day and requires the potassium-supplement/salt-substitute contraindication at 100 mg/day or more.

Discussion of potassium physiology, dietary intake, kidney handling, medication interactions and blood-pressure research is ingredient education from Health Canada, NIH and peer-reviewed research. Those findings are not expanded Biogénique product claims. In particular, blood-pressure studies used potassium changes far larger than this product provides.
