What Is Vitamin K2?
Vitamin K2 is one member of the vitamin K family. It includes several compounds called menaquinones, including MK-4 and MK-7. Vitamin K is best known for its role in normal blood clotting, but vitamin K-dependent proteins are also involved in bone metabolism and other calcium-related processes.
That biology has led to a lot of bold K2 marketing: “moves calcium out of arteries,” “prevents osteoporosis,” or “must always be taken with vitamin D3.” Those statements run ahead of the clinical evidence. The more useful question is what we actually know, what remains uncertain, and how a Canadian consumer should interpret a 120 mcg MK-7 supplement.
|
Quick Answer Vitamin K2 is a fat-soluble form of vitamin K. MK-7 is a long-chain menaquinone used in many supplements because it remains in circulation longer than some other forms. Biogénique Vitamin K2 provides 120 mcg of MK-7 per capsule. Its current Health Canada licence authorizes it as a vitamin supplement, a factor in normal growth and development, and to help prevent vitamin K deficiency. Research on bone and vascular outcomes is interesting but mixed, so those study findings should not be treated as guaranteed product benefits. |
K1 vs. K2: Same Vitamin Family, Different Forms
Vitamin K1, or phylloquinone, is the main dietary form and is abundant in leafy green vegetables. Vitamin K2 refers to menaquinones, designated MK-4 through MK-13. Fermented foods such as natto can contain substantial menaquinones, while smaller amounts occur in some animal and fermented foods.
All forms participate in the vitamin K cycle, which enables the carboxylation of vitamin K-dependent proteins. The important nuance is that different K forms have different pharmacokinetics. MK-7 has a relatively long circulating half-life, which helps explain why it is commonly formulated for once-daily supplementation. A longer half-life, however, is not the same thing as proof of superior outcomes for every health goal.
What Does MK-7 Actually Do?
Vitamin K acts as a cofactor for an enzyme that activates specific proteins by carboxylation. Two proteins often discussed in K2 research are osteocalcin, which is involved in bone biology, and matrix Gla protein (MGP), which is involved in the regulation of mineralization in soft tissues.
This mechanism is real. The common slogan that K2 simply “sends calcium to bones and removes it from arteries” is not. Human biology is more complex, and clinical outcomes depend on population, baseline health, dose, duration and other nutrients.
Vitamin K2 and Bone Health: Promising Biology, Mixed Long-Term Trials
The bone literature is a good example of why Biogénique should separate mechanism from outcome. In a 3-year randomized trial of 244 healthy postmenopausal women, 180 mcg/day of MK-7 improved vitamin K status and reduced the age-related decline in bone mineral density at the lumbar spine and femoral neck, but not at the total hip.
A different 3-year randomized trial enrolled 142 postmenopausal women with osteopenia. Participants received 375 mcg/day of MK-7 or placebo, while both groups also received vitamin D3 and calcium. MK-7 improved osteocalcin carboxylation, yet the groups did not differ in bone mineral density, bone turnover markers or bone microarchitecture.
|
What that means K2 clearly changes vitamin K-dependent biomarkers. Whether that reliably translates into clinically meaningful bone protection across populations is less certain. It is not appropriate to promise osteoporosis treatment, fracture prevention or guaranteed increases in bone density from this product. |
What About Heart Health and Arterial Calcification?
MGP provides a biologically plausible reason to study vitamin K2 and vascular calcification, but trials have not produced a single clean answer. In a 24-month randomized trial of 365 older men with aortic valve calcification, 720 mcg/day of MK-7 plus vitamin D lowered an inactive MGP marker but did not significantly slow aortic-valve or coronary calcification.
A newer 2026 randomized trial in 180 patients with symptomatic coronary artery disease used 360 mcg/day of MK-7 for two years and reported slower progression of coronary calcium than placebo. The investigators explicitly noted that the clinical significance remains to be determined.
So the current evidence does not justify saying that K2 “cleans arteries,” prevents cardiovascular disease, or reverses calcification. The vascular story is still an active research question.

Do You Need Vitamin K2 With Vitamin D3?
Vitamin D and vitamin K participate in related aspects of calcium and bone biology, which is why they are often sold together. But “everyone who takes D3 must take K2” is too strong.
The Rønn trial is useful here: adding MK-7 to vitamin D3 and calcium improved a vitamin K-dependent biomarker but did not improve bone density over three years. For some consumers, a combined D3 + K2 product is simply convenient. Others may already receive enough vitamin D or may need a different dose based on diet, sun exposure, lab results or clinician guidance.
Biogénique offers both options: standalone Vitamin K2 120 mcg and a Vitamin D3 + K2 combination. Choose based on your actual need, not on a blanket rule.
What Is Vitamin K2 Deficiency?
Clinically significant vitamin K deficiency is uncommon in healthy adults, but it can occur when vitamin K absorption is impaired or when medications interfere with vitamin K metabolism. The most obvious consequence of severe deficiency is impaired clotting.
It is also important not to confuse “low K2 intake” with a diagnosed deficiency. There is no routine consumer test that turns every low-MK-7 diet into a disease state. Biogénique’s current licensed wording is appropriately narrow: the product helps prevent vitamin K deficiency and is a vitamin supplement.

Compliance note: Older Biogénique marketing and the current website use broader bone/calcium language. For regulatory precision, this article treats the current Health Canada Product Licence as the source of truth for authorized Biogénique product claims. Bone, osteocalcin, MGP and vascular findings are discussed as external scientific research, not as additional licensed claims.
Quality, COA Status & 3X PUR™
Biogénique’s Quality Control program is designed to make batch documentation accessible. For this standalone Vitamin K2 SKU, however, we did not locate a current lot-specific COA in the verified Drive set used for this article.
That matters: without a matching current COA, we should not invent a lot number, quote contaminant results, claim a specific disintegration time, or apply lot-specific 3X PUR™ results. The correct statement is simply that current product identity, NPN, ingredient strength, capsule count and licence details were verified, while lot-specific COA results were not available for verification.

How to Decide Whether Vitamin K2 Fits Your Routine
-
Start with the reason. If you are looking for a general vitamin K supplement or want to help prevent vitamin K deficiency, the current NPN directly supports that use.
-
Check medications first. If you take warfarin or another blood thinner, do not add K2 casually. Vitamin K can materially affect anticoagulant therapy.
-
Do not treat K2 as an osteoporosis or heart-disease treatment. Those are clinical conditions, and the evidence is not strong enough to replace established care.
-
If you already take vitamin D3, decide whether you want a standalone K2 dose or a combined D3 + K2 product. There is no universal rule that one format is always better.
-
Follow the label. Biogénique Vitamin K2 is licensed for adults at one 120 mcg capsule once daily.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is MK-7 the same as vitamin K2?
MK-7 is one form of vitamin K2. Vitamin K2 is a family of menaquinones, including MK-4, MK-7 and others.
Is MK-7 better than MK-4?
MK-7 remains in circulation longer, which makes once-daily dosing practical. That pharmacokinetic advantage does not prove that MK-7 produces better clinical outcomes for every purpose.
Does vitamin K2 remove calcium from arteries?
That wording is too simplistic. Vitamin K-dependent MGP is involved in mineralization biology, and some trials show improved MGP status. Clinical trials of vascular calcification have been mixed, so K2 should not be presented as an artery-cleaning treatment.
Should everyone who takes vitamin D3 also take K2?
No universal rule says they must. The nutrients interact with related calcium and bone pathways, but whether you need both depends on your diet, supplement doses, medical context and goals.
How much K2 is in Biogénique Vitamin K2?
Each capsule provides 120 mcg of vitamin K2 from menaquinone-7 (MK-7). The licensed adult dose is one capsule once daily.
Can I take K2 with blood thinners?
Do not make that decision without your healthcare practitioner. Biogénique’s current Product Licence specifically instructs people taking blood thinners to consult a health care practitioner before use.
Bottom Line
Vitamin K2 deserves a more precise explanation than the old “calcium traffic cop” story. MK-7 is a legitimate form of vitamin K with a long circulating half-life and clear effects on vitamin K-dependent proteins. Human trials show biologic activity and some promising signals, but bone and cardiovascular outcomes remain inconsistent.
For Biogénique Vitamin K2, the source of truth is straightforward: 120 mcg MK-7 per capsule, NPN 80133278, one capsule daily for adults, with licensed use as a vitamin supplement that helps prevent vitamin K deficiency. That is a strong, compliant foundation. The science can add context—but it should not be used to manufacture claims the licence does not make.
