What is magnesium citrate?
Magnesium citrate is a magnesium salt of citric acid. In a supplement, the citrate is the source compound; the physiologically relevant dose is the amount of elemental magnesium it supplies. Those numbers are not interchangeable. A capsule can contain a larger mass of magnesium-citrate salt while delivering a smaller amount of magnesium itself.
Health Canada’s current vitamin/mineral monograph makes this distinction explicit: mineral dose information refers to the elemental mineral, not the source material. Its labelling appendix warns that confusion between element and salt quantities has contributed to medication errors in Canada and can have serious consequences. A credible label should make the elemental amount unmistakable.
What benefits are supported?
Magnesium participates in more than 300 enzyme systems. It contributes to energy production, protein and nucleic-acid synthesis, nerve signalling, muscle contraction and bone structure. Health Canada’s monograph permits magnesium claims related to bones and teeth, energy metabolism and tissue formation, normal muscle and heart-muscle function, electrolyte balance, nervous-system function and prevention of deficiency when the formula and dose meet the relevant conditions.
That does not make a citrate capsule a treatment for cramps, insomnia, anxiety, hypertension or osteoporosis. Magnesium biology is broader than the evidence for a specific product outcome. A product article may explain established nutrient functions, but its product claims must match the exact current licence. Is magnesium citrate better absorbed than other forms?
The strongest practical comparison is with oxide. In a randomized, double-blind 60-day trial of 46 healthy adults receiving 300 mg elemental magnesium daily, citrate and an amino-acid chelate produced greater 24-hour urinary magnesium excretion than oxide. Citrate also produced the highest mean serum magnesium concentration in that study. An earlier study likewise found citrate more soluble and more absorbable than oxide.
These trials support saying ‘better absorbed than oxide under the studied conditions.’ They do not prove that citrate is universally superior to bisglycinate, malate, threonate or every proprietary formulation. The studies were small, biomarkers varied, and higher absorption does not automatically translate into a noticeable benefit for a person who was already magnesium-replete.
Why citrate can affect the gut
Unabsorbed magnesium salts pull water into the intestine, which can loosen stools. NIH lists diarrhea, nausea and abdominal cramping among the common effects of high supplemental doses. Citrate is also used in much larger medicinal doses as an osmotic laxative, but a daily mineral supplement and a bowel-cleansing product are not interchangeable.
Digestive sensitivity is therefore part of the form decision, not an afterthought. Loose stools are not proof that a product is ‘detoxing,’ and a stronger laxative effect is not evidence of better absorption. A magnesium complex combines forms, which may simplify a multi-form preference but makes each form’s contribution harder to interpret.

How much magnesium do adults need?
Recommended intakes include magnesium from food, beverages and supplements. NIH lists adult targets of 310–320 mg per day for most women and 400–420 mg for most men, with life-stage differences. Foods such as pumpkin seeds, chia seeds, almonds, legumes, whole grains and leafy greens can contribute meaningfully.
The U.S. adult upper level of 350 mg applies only to magnesium from supplements and medications, not food. Health Canada’s natural-health-product monograph permits different licensed ranges and requires a diarrhea statement above 350 mg per day. At review time, the storefront displayed 150 mg elemental magnesium per capsule and NPN 80079622, with 30- and 90-count variants available. Internal Supplement Facts artwork also showed 150 mg, but its filenames referenced 80130777. By contrast, Canadian artwork for NPN 80079622 and the matching lot 240535 COA listed 500 mg per capsule. That lot was manufactured in May 2024 and expired in April 2026.
The historical COA reported passing physical, disintegration, microbial and heavy-metal results for lot 240535. It is not proof for the 150 mg product now shown online, and the report does not present a measured magnesium assay result.
