How Much Ashwagandha Per Day? The Number Alone Is the Wrong Starting Point
If you search “how much ashwagandha per day,” you will quickly find confident answers such as 300 mg, 500 mg, 600 mg or even several grams. The problem is that these numbers often compare things that are not equivalent: plain root powder, concentrated root extracts, root-and-leaf extracts, standardized proprietary extracts and sustained-release formulas.
A useful dosage answer has to start with the exact product. For a licensed Canadian natural health product, the finished-product label tells you how much of that formulation to take. Research papers can explain the ingredient, but they are not a licence to copy the dose from a different extract.
|
QUICK ANSWER There is no universal ashwagandha dose that can be copied across products. For Biogénique Ashwagandha NPN 80067337 specifically, the current Product Facts label says adults take 1 capsule once daily. Each capsule contains 500 mg of a 10:1 Withania somnifera root extract, with a QCE of 5,000 mg dried root. The 5,000 mg QCE is an equivalence statement - it does not mean the capsule physically contains 5 grams of root powder, and it does not mean you should take 5,000 mg of extract. |
1. Start with the finished-product label, not a generic internet dose
The current Biogénique label reviewed in the company Drive is specific: adults take 1 capsule once daily. That is the licensed direction for this finished product. Each capsule contains Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera, root) 500 mg as a 10:1 extract, QCE 5,000 mg. The only listed non-medicinal ingredient is hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (hypromellose).
This matters because “500 mg of ashwagandha” is incomplete information. A 500 mg capsule of plain root powder is not automatically equivalent to 500 mg of a 10:1 extract, and neither is automatically equivalent to a proprietary extract standardized to a particular withanolide content.

2. What do 500 mg, 10:1 and QCE 5,000 mg actually mean?
Three numbers appear around this product, and they answer three different questions. Mixing them together creates most of the dosage confusion.
|
Number |
What it describes |
What it does NOT mean |
|---|---|---|
|
500 mg |
Amount of ashwagandha root extract listed per capsule |
Not 500 mg of raw root powder and not a universal clinical dose |
|
10:1 |
Extract ratio: the extract is represented as a ten-to-one concentration relative to starting herb |
Not “10 times better” and not proof of a specific clinical effect |
|
QCE 5,000 mg |
Quantity crude equivalent: the amount of dried root represented by the extract |
Not 5,000 mg of extract physically inside the capsule |
|
THE KEY DISTINCTION Biogénique’s capsule contains 500 mg of extract. The label expresses that extract as QCE 5,000 mg dried root. Those are not two ingredients and should not be added together. |
3. What Health Canada’s 2025 Ashwagandha monograph says about dose
Health Canada’s current Ashwagandha monograph, dated February 28, 2025, applies to adults 18 years and older and separates dose ranges by preparation and intended claim. For traditional Ayurvedic claims, it lists 2 to 6 grams of dried root per day for dry, powdered and specified non-standardized preparations. For the ingredient-level adaptogen use, it lists 2.5 to 6.5 grams of dried root or whole plant per day for specified preparations.
Those monograph quantities are licensing guidance for defined preparations. They are not an instruction for consumers to ignore the label on a finished product and calculate their own capsule count. Even when a QCE number happens to fall numerically inside a monograph dried-herb range, preparation details still matter. For Biogénique NPN 80067337, the practical dose remains the one on the current label: 1 capsule once daily.

4. Why clinical-study doses do not give one universal “best” dose
The clinical literature is exactly why a single milligram answer is misleading. NIH’s Office of Dietary Supplements notes that stress and anxiety trials have used a wide range of preparations: about 240 to 1,250 mg/day of extract in the reviewed studies, and one study used whole-root granules equivalent to 6,000 mg of root powder. NIH also emphasizes that different extraction and standardization processes make it difficult to identify one recommended amount.
Three randomized trials make the problem easy to see:

What it tells us |
|---|---|---|---|---|
|
Salve et al. 2019 |
60 stressed healthy adults |
High-concentration root aqueous extract |
250 or 600 mg/day; 8 weeks |
Dose-response can be studied within one defined extract; it does not rank all ashwagandha products. |
|
Pandit et al. 2024 |
131 enrolled; 98 in final analysis |
Root-and-leaf water extract |
125, 250 or 500 mg/day; 8 weeks |
Different doses of a specific extract can produce different outcomes; that does not create a universal dose. |
|
Thanawala et al. 2026 |
135 randomized; 126 completed |
Sustained-release root extract (AshwaSR) |
150 or 300 mg/day; 60 days |
A lower milligram number can still represent a different engineered preparation; milligrams alone are not enough. |

DO NOT COPY A RESEARCH-PAPER DOSE A study showing an effect at 600 mg/day of one standardized extract does not prove that two capsules of a different 500 mg 10:1 extract are better than one. For Biogénique, taking two capsules would exceed the reviewed label direction of one capsule daily. |
5. Is 500 mg of ashwagandha a high dose?
By itself, “500 mg” does not answer that question. You need to know whether the number refers to root powder, extract, standardized extract or a crude-herb equivalent. Biogénique’s 500 mg is a 10:1 root extract with QCE 5,000 mg dried root. Another brand’s 500 mg could be a very different preparation.
This is also why “600 mg is clinically studied” is weak buying advice. Some trials use 600 mg/day, some use 300 mg/day, some use much lower amounts of concentrated or sustained-release preparations, and some use root-and-leaf extracts rather than root-only extracts. The better comparison is preparation + plant part + extract ratio/standardization + licensed directions - not the front-label milligram number alone.
6. Should men, women or larger adults automatically take more?
The current Biogénique label does not provide different adult doses by sex or body weight. It states one adult direction: 1 capsule once daily. That means there is no label basis for doubling the dose because someone is male, larger-bodied, training hard or wants a stronger effect.
Clinical trials often use fixed doses rather than body-weight dosing, and the dose depends heavily on the extract being studied. Self-scaling by body weight is therefore not a defensible shortcut.
7. Can you take 1,000 mg of Biogénique Ashwagandha?
For this specific product, 1,000 mg of extract would mean two capsules. That is not the reviewed label direction. The label says adults take 1 capsule once daily. A different study or a different product using 1,000 mg does not change the licensed directions for NPN 80067337.
If a healthcare professional recommends a different approach for an individual medical reason, that is a separate clinical decision. It should not be inferred from a blog or from another brand’s study.

9. The COA contains another “mg” number - and it is not the dose
Lot 240525’s Certificate of Analysis reports an average filled-capsule weight of 611.32 mg against a specification of 605.00 mg ±7.5%. That 611.32 mg is the gross capsule-fill measurement used for a physical quality specification. It is not a statement that the capsule contains 611.32 mg of ashwagandha extract.
|
DO NOT CONFUSE CAPSULE WEIGHT WITH ACTIVE DOSE Medicinal ingredient on label: 500 mg extract. QCE: 5,000 mg dried-root equivalent. COA capsule weight result: 611.32 mg total filled-capsule weight. These numbers measure different things. |
10. Quality First: what lot 240525 testing actually shows
The COA answers a quality-control question, not a clinical dose-response question: did the tested finished-product lot meet the specifications listed on the certificate? For lot 240525, the reported results include physical specifications, disintegration, microbial tests, four specified pathogens and heavy metals.

The tested lot met the listed specifications. Biogénique’s 3X PUR™ framework can organize these results as Purity (microbial/pathogen/heavy-metal testing), Quality (capsule specifications) and Performance (disintegration). 3X PUR™ is Biogénique’s framework for interpreting lot testing; it is not a certification issued by the laboratory.
One more limitation matters: this COA does not report a withanolide assay result. It should not be presented as proof of a specific withanolide percentage or as proof that this product will reproduce the outcomes of a proprietary clinical extract.

11. A practical decision framework for choosing an ashwagandha dose
1. Read the exact Product Facts label first. The dose belongs to that formulation, not to the ingredient name in isolation.
2. Identify the plant part and preparation. Root powder, root extract, root-and-leaf extract and sustained-release preparations are not interchangeable.
3. Separate extract milligrams from QCE/DHE. QCE describes crude-herb equivalence; it is not additional extract weight.
4. Do not use a “more is better” rule. A higher milligram number can simply reflect a less concentrated preparation.
5. Do not exceed the finished-product label because another trial used more. For Biogénique, the reviewed dose is 1 capsule once daily.
6. Check safety before dose optimization. Pregnancy, breastfeeding, medications, thyroid/liver/autoimmune conditions and drowsiness concerns deserve professional review rather than self-experimentation.
7. Use batch evidence for quality questions, not as proof of clinical efficacy. COA compliance and clinical outcomes are different evidence layers.
If you are choosing by health goal rather than ingredient name, Biogénique VitaQuiz / Find My Formula can be a starting point; it does not replace individualized medical advice.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much ashwagandha per day should I take?
There is no single daily milligram amount that applies to every ashwagandha product. Follow the directions on the exact licensed product. For Biogénique NPN 80067337, the reviewed label says adults take 1 capsule once daily, providing 500 mg of 10:1 root extract (QCE 5,000 mg).
Is 500 mg of ashwagandha enough?
That depends on what the 500 mg represents. Biogénique’s 500 mg is a 10:1 root extract. Another 500 mg product may be plain powder or a differently standardized extract. “Enough” cannot be judged from milligrams alone.
Is 600 mg of ashwagandha better than 500 mg?
Not automatically. Some trials have used 600 mg/day, but others have used 150, 240, 300, 400 or 500 mg/day of different extracts. The study dose only makes sense together with the exact preparation tested.
Can I take two Biogénique 500 mg capsules a day?
That would exceed the current reviewed product direction. The label says adults take 1 capsule once daily. Do not double the dose simply because a different trial or brand used a larger milligram amount.
Does QCE 5,000 mg mean I am taking 5,000 mg of ashwagandha extract?
No. The capsule lists 500 mg of a 10:1 root extract. QCE 5,000 mg expresses the amount of dried root represented by that extract; it is not 5,000 mg of extract physically inside the capsule.
What does 10:1 ashwagandha mean?
It is an extract-ratio statement. In this product, 500 mg of extract is labelled as QCE 5,000 mg dried root. The ratio does not by itself prove that the product is “10 times more effective.”
Should dosage be different for men and women?
The current Biogénique label does not provide sex-specific adult doses. Its direction is 1 capsule once daily for adults. Male- or female-specific research should not be used to rewrite the label dose.
Should I take ashwagandha in the morning or at night?
The current Biogénique label specifies once daily but does not specify a clock time. Timing is a separate question from dose and can depend on individual tolerability, routine and whether drowsiness occurs.
How long should I take ashwagandha?
Health Canada’s current monograph does not require a duration-of-use statement for the monograph claims, but that does not prove indefinite use is appropriate. NIH notes that many safety data are short term and long-term safety remains less certain. If you plan ongoing use, especially with medications or medical conditions, discuss it with a qualified healthcare professional.
Bottom Line
The best answer to “how much ashwagandha per day?” is not one universal number. Ashwagandha products can differ by plant part, extract ratio, standardization, delivery system and crude-herb equivalence. Comparing only front-label milligrams creates false precision.
For Biogénique Ashwagandha, the verified answer is straightforward: adults take 1 capsule once daily. Each capsule contains 500 mg of 10:1 Withania somnifera root extract, QCE 5,000 mg dried root, under NPN 80067337. Lot 240525 has finished-product testing for physical specifications, disintegration, microbial quality, specified pathogens and heavy metals. The tested lot met the listed specifications.
The practical rule is simple: follow the exact licensed label, understand what the extract numbers mean, and do not borrow a dose from a study that used a different preparation.

Evidence & Compliance Note
This article deliberately separates three evidence layers: (1) the specific licensed directions and claims on the Biogénique NPN 80067337 label reviewed in Google Drive; (2) Health Canada’s ingredient-level Ashwagandha monograph; and (3) external clinical research using other ashwagandha preparations. Doses from proprietary, standardized, root-and-leaf or sustained-release extracts are presented as research context and are not represented as the licensed dose or proven clinical performance of Biogénique Ashwagandha.
Verification completed August 17, 2026 against the current Biogénique Product Facts/label for lot 240525, Certificate of Analysis for lot 240525, the current 2025 Health Canada monograph, the current July 9, 2026 technical sheet, and current Biogénique web links. Where marketing language was broader than the Product Facts label, the label was treated as the source of truth.
