Can You Take L-Carnitine + Green Tea Every Day? Duration, Safety & When to Stop
Daily dosing is on the label. “Take it forever” is not. Here is the difference between product directions, updated Health Canada green-tea guidance, long-term evidence and the warning signs that should end the experiment.
Yes, the Label Is Daily — But That Is Not the Same as “Indefinitely”
There are two bad ways to answer the question “Can I take L-carnitine every day?” One is to say yes because L-carnitine is naturally present in the body. The other is to say no because every supplement must be “cycled.” Neither is careful enough for a combination product that also contains concentrated green tea extract.
For Biogénique L-Carnitine + Green Tea, the current Canadian label provides a daily dosing schedule: adults take one capsule once or twice daily with food, with the workout direction to take it 2–4 hours before exercise. The label itself does not print a maximum duration of use.
But the current Health Canada Green Tea Extract ingredient monograph, updated July 25, 2025, adds a broader safety instruction: ask a health care practitioner for use beyond 12 weeks. That does not rewrite the finished-product licence; it is updated ingredient-level guidance that matters when the question shifts from “Can I take today’s dose?” to “Should I keep taking this for months?”

QUICK ANSWER |
1. What the Current Biogénique Label Actually Allows
|
Label item |
Verified current information |
|---|---|
|
NPN |
80086440 - active Health Canada product licence |
|
Medicinal ingredients per capsule |
L-Carnitine 500 mg; Green Tea (Camellia sinensis, leaf) 50 mg, 2:1 extract, QCE 100 mg |
|
Recommended dose |
Adults: 1 capsule once or twice daily |
|
Food direction |
Take with food |
|
Exercise direction |
Take 2–4 hours prior to exercise |
|
Licensed use |
Workout support supplement; to be used with reduced dietary calorie intake and increased physical activity to help in weight management |
|
Duration printed on current label |
No maximum duration statement printed |
|
Lot reviewed |
241027; expiry September 2027 |
The first point is important: one capsule once or twice daily is the authorized schedule. “Daily use” does not mean take more on training days, double the dose if you missed yesterday, or continue indefinitely without reassessing why you are taking it.
The licensed weight-management wording is also conditional. The product is to be used with reduced dietary calorie intake and increased physical activity. Daily capsule use does not replace those conditions and does not guarantee weight loss.

2. Does L-Carnitine Need to Be “Cycled”?
There is no cycling instruction on the current Biogénique label, and Health Canada’s current L-Carnitine monograph does not require an on-off cycle. That makes blanket rules such as “8 weeks on, 2 weeks off” marketing folklore unless a specific clinical reason is given.
Clinical studies have administered L-carnitine daily for periods ranging from days to many months, but those trials used different populations, doses and goals. NIH’s Office of Dietary Supplements summarizes weight-related trials using roughly 1.8–4 g/day for 30 to 360 days, while exercise studies have used gram-level doses for one dose through several months. That evidence shows that repeated daily dosing has been studied; it does not establish that every healthy consumer benefits from indefinite daily supplementation.

3. Green Tea Extract Changes the Long-Term Question
Biogénique is not a single-ingredient L-carnitine product. It also contains a concentrated Camellia sinensis leaf extract. That matters because current Health Canada guidance for green tea extract includes duration and liver-safety instructions that are not present in the L-carnitine monograph.
|
Current Health Canada green-tea guidance |
What it means for a consumer |
|---|---|
|
Take with a meal/food |
This matches the current Biogénique label. Empty-stomach “fat burner” routines are not the label-based approach. |
|
Ask a health care practitioner for use beyond 12 weeks |
Twelve weeks is a review point, not a claim that harm begins on day 85. It means prolonged use deserves professional review. |
|
Ask before use with a liver disorder or iron deficiency |
These cautions overlap with the current Biogénique label. |
|
Ask before use if taking medications |
The 2025 ingredient monograph is broader than the current product label on medication review. |
|
Stop and seek advice for new symptoms such as jaundice, dark urine, nausea, vomiting or stomach pain |
The current Biogénique label also carries a stop-use liver-warning section. |
|
For weight-management green tea products: do not use if pregnant |
This is newer ingredient-level guidance and is stricter than the current Biogénique label, which says to consult a health care practitioner if pregnant. Do not self-use this product during pregnancy. |
That last point is exactly why current monographs matter. The finished-product label remains the primary source for what Biogénique is licensed to claim and how it is labeled. But updated ingredient-level safety guidance should not be ignored simply because the licence predates the monograph revision.

4. Is Long-Term L-Carnitine Use Proven Safe?
Not in the sense most people mean by that question. L-carnitine has been studied for months and, in some medical populations, longer. But long-term studies are heterogeneous, often use higher doses than Biogénique, and are not designed to prove that indefinite supplementation is risk-free for a healthy person.
NIH notes that carnitine has no established tolerable upper intake level, but doses around 3 g/day can cause gastrointestinal symptoms and fishy body odour. NIH also describes an unresolved research question around gut-microbiome conversion of carnitine to TMAO and possible cardiovascular implications. The fact that the implications remain uncertain is a reason to avoid both alarmism and complacency.
Biogénique’s labeled daily L-carnitine exposure is lower — 500 mg to 1,000 mg/day — but dose comparisons do not erase the separate green-tea extract safety issue. A combination product should be judged as a combination product.

5. Rare Liver Injury: What “Rare” Should and Should Not Mean
The current Health Canada licence for NPN 80086440 explicitly states that rare, unpredictable cases of liver injury associated with green tea extract-containing products have been reported in Canada and internationally. This is not a hypothetical warning imported from another brand; it is part of the licensed risk information for this product.
Health Canada’s safety review concluded that concentrated green tea extract natural health products have been associated with rare liver injury and reinforced two practical risk-reduction instructions: take green tea extract with food, and stop use and seek medical advice if symptoms of liver trouble appear.
NCCIH similarly reports that liver injury is uncommon but has occurred primarily with green tea extracts in tablets or capsules. The correct interpretation is neither “green tea extract is dangerous” nor “rare means ignore it.” It means know the warning signs before you start.

6. When Should You Stop or Get Professional Advice?
|
Situation |
What the evidence/label says |
Practical move |
|---|---|---|
|
You develop listed liver-warning symptoms |
The product label says stop use and consult a health care practitioner. |
Stop the product; do not “wait it out” or restart on your own. |
|
You have kidney disease, seizure disorder, liver disorder or iron deficiency |
The current label says consult before use. |
Get individualized advice before starting or continuing. |
|
You are pregnant or breastfeeding |
Current product label says consult; 2025 green-tea monograph says weight-management products should not be used in pregnancy. |
Do not self-use during pregnancy; discuss breastfeeding use with a qualified clinician. |
|
You take prescription or regular medications |
2025 green-tea monograph advises asking a health professional before use with medications; NCCIH documents possible interactions. |
Ask a pharmacist/clinician to review the combination. |
|
You reach 12 weeks of continuous use |
2025 green-tea monograph says ask a health care practitioner for use beyond 12 weeks. |
Use 12 weeks as a review point rather than automatically continuing. |
|
You are not getting the result you expected |
The product is licensed to help with weight management only within reduced calories + increased activity; no result is guaranteed. |
Do not escalate the dose. Reassess the goal, diet/activity plan and whether the product is adding value. |
7. Daily Use Does Not Mean Dose Escalation
The current Biogénique label sets a maximum of two capsules in a day — 1,000 mg of L-carnitine plus two 50 mg servings of the green tea extract. More is not “more effective” by default.
This is especially important because Health Canada’s L-Carnitine monograph uses different daily dose bands for different ingredient-level claims. Some fat-metabolism and fat-oxidation claims require 3–4 g/day of L-carnitine. Biogénique’s licence does not carry those claims, and consumers should not try to manufacture a higher-dose protocol by exceeding the product label.

9. Quality First: What Current Lot 241027 Testing Actually Shows
A daily-use article should distinguish biological safety evidence from lot quality. Biogénique’s matching COA for lot 241027 confirms the formula listed on the tested batch and reports capsule, disintegration, microbial, pathogen and heavy-metal results. It does not prove long-term clinical safety or efficacy.

10. A Practical Duration Decision Framework
|
Stage |
Question to ask |
Decision rule |
|---|---|---|
|
Before starting |
Do I have a label-listed condition, pregnancy/breastfeeding, iron deficiency or regular medication use? |
If yes, get professional review first rather than self-starting. |
|
First days/weeks |
Am I tolerating the product and taking it with food at the label dose? |
Stay within 1 capsule once or twice daily. Stop for liver-warning symptoms. |
|
Around 8–12 weeks |
Is the product actually helping within the calorie/activity program I intended to follow? |
Reassess value. Do not continue merely because the bottle says “daily.” |
|
Beyond 12 weeks |
Have I reviewed continued green-tea extract use with a health professional? |
Health Canada’s 2025 green-tea monograph says ask a health care practitioner for use beyond 12 weeks. |
|
Any time symptoms change |
New liver-type symptoms, medication changes, new diagnosis, pregnancy, or other concern? |
Pause/stop as appropriate and get qualified advice instead of adjusting the dose yourself. |
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I take Biogénique L-Carnitine + Green Tea every day?
The current label provides a daily schedule: adults take 1 capsule once or twice daily with food. Stay within that dose and follow the label warnings.
How long can I take L-carnitine?
Biogénique’s current finished-product label does not print a maximum duration. However, Health Canada’s July 2025 Green Tea Extract monograph says to ask a health care practitioner for use beyond 12 weeks.
Do I need to cycle L-carnitine?
There is no cycling requirement on the current Biogénique label or Health Canada L-Carnitine monograph. A generic “8 weeks on, 2 weeks off” rule is not established for this product.
Can I take it on rest days?
The current label gives a daily dose and does not print a separate rest-day protocol. Blog 8 covers timing in detail; do not invent extra or catch-up doses.
Is it safe to take forever?
No responsible source can turn the word “daily” into “proven safe forever.” Long-term L-carnitine research is mixed and product-specific, while current green-tea guidance calls for professional review beyond 12 weeks.
What symptoms mean I should stop?
The current label says to stop and consult a health care practitioner if symptoms of liver trouble develop, including jaundice, stomach pain, dark urine, sweating, nausea, unusual tiredness and/or loss of appetite.
Can I keep taking it if I start a new medication?
Do not assume so. Health Canada’s current Green Tea Extract monograph advises asking a health professional before use if taking medications, and NCCIH documents possible green-tea interactions with some medicines.
Can I take more if I am not seeing weight-loss results?
No. The licensed use is weight-management support only within reduced dietary calories and increased physical activity. Do not exceed the label dose to chase a result.
Can I take it during pregnancy?
Do not self-use it during pregnancy. The current product label says to consult a health care practitioner if pregnant, and Health Canada’s 2025 Green Tea Extract monograph says weight-management green-tea products should not be used during pregnancy.
Does the COA prove it is safe for long-term daily use?
No. The COA shows that the tested lot met the listed finished-product quality specifications. It is not a months- or years-long clinical safety study.
Bottom Line
Yes — Biogénique L-Carnitine + Green Tea is labeled for daily use at one capsule once or twice daily with food. But “daily” describes the dosing schedule; it does not establish an unlimited duration.
The current finished-product label does not print a maximum duration. The more recent 2025 Health Canada Green Tea Extract monograph advises professional review for use beyond 12 weeks, and both the product licence and broader green-tea safety guidance emphasize liver-warning symptoms that should trigger stopping the product and seeking advice.
There is also no evidence-based need to create a generic “cycling” schedule or to increase the dose when results disappoint. The higher-value approach is simple: use the licensed dose for a defined reason, pair the weight-management claim with the conditions actually written into the licence, reassess at roughly 12 weeks, and treat new symptoms or medication/health changes as reasons to get qualified advice.

Evidence & Compliance Note
Biogénique-specific claims, dose and warnings in this article are taken from the current finished-product label and active Health Canada licence for NPN 80086440. Health Canada’s July 25, 2025 L-Carnitine and Green Tea Extract monographs are identified as ingredient-level regulatory guidance and are not presented as additional authorized Biogénique product claims. The current Green Tea Extract monograph is newer than the public licence revision date and includes duration, medication and pregnancy guidance that is broader or stricter than the current finished-product label; those differences are explicitly identified rather than blended.
Lot 241027 COA data are used only for the listed finished-product tests. The tested lot met the listed specifications. The COA does not prove long-term clinical safety, weight loss, fat oxidation, efficacy or active-ingredient potency unless a corresponding assay is shown. 3X PUR™ is Biogénique’s framework for interpreting lot testing, not a laboratory-issued certification.
